O-rings

O-Rings: Versatile Sealing Fundamentals

O-rings remain the most widely used seals in history due to their simplicity, low cost, ease of installation, and minimal space requirements. Designed for both static (e.g., flange connections) and dynamic (e.g., piston rods) applications, O-rings excel in oilfield BOPs, valves, and wireline tools under pressures up to 10,000 psi (69 MPa).

A properly engineered O-ring groove compresses the seal diametrically out-of-round—even before system pressure—by 15-30% (per AS568 standards). This distortion of the resilient elastomeric compound (e.g., HNBR, FKM) fills potential leakage paths via viscoelastic deformation, creating a high-integrity seal resistant to extrusion and blow-by.
